Henna

Henna is a natural dye extracted from the dried and powdered leaves, petioles and young shoots of the mignonette tree, or henna shrub (Lawsonia inermis). The natural dye is traditionally found in India, Pakistan, Middle East, and Northern Africa. When ground the dried leaves become a greenish powder, but the dye is reddish to dark brown. Strong tea or coffee, lemon juice (or other acidic liquid) and essential oils (such as tea tree, eucalyptus, clove and lavender) can be used to release the dye from the powder.
The dye can be mixed with water to make a paste with mud-like consistency that will adhere well to the hair. The paste should be allowed to oxidize for a couple of hours before use. After the paste has been applied to the hair, it should stay on the hair as long as possible (usually for about 20-40 minutes). Henna stains the hair temporarily for about 2-4 weeks. To create various shades with henna, paraphenylenediamine (PPD) was added which in rare cases can induce allergic reactions. The FDA has not approved henna for direct application to the skin. It has been approved, however, as hair dye in order to add a tint and shine to the hair.

Advantages of Henna over Chemical Hair Dyes:
- Natural look for covering grey or white hair
- Natural conditioning effect
- Prevents hair loss
- Controls dandruff

News & Facts
Zinc Oxides: Which One is Right for You?
Regular zinc oxide has a particle size of >200 nm (nanometer), a visible whitening effect on the skin, is water dispersible, gives great coverage in makeup products and lip balms, and offers good protection in baby care products.
Micronized zinc oxide
has a particle size of <200nm (mean 86nm), has a minimal whitening effect on the skin, is water dispersible, offers superior sun protection but does not offer coverage in makeup products.
Micronized zinc oxide coated with silicone offers basically the same features as non-coated micronized zinc oxide but is easier to disperse in oils, and works well in formulas containing carbomers.
