A cosmetic product does not necessarily have to consist of 100% natural products to make the claim "natural"; a majority of natural ingredients in a skincare product may suffice to call it "natural". There is no generally accepted definition of the term "natural" nor is it regulated by any authority. Only the term "organic" is regulated and requires certification from the USDA. The term "natural' can mean:
  • Pure, unprocessed ingredients occurring in nature (like food-based cosmetics made of bananas etc.)
  • Processed and/or co-synthesized ingredients made of ingredients originally derived from natural products (e.g. stearic acid, potassium sorbate etc.)
  • Synthetically produced ingredients made exactly the same way as naturally occurring ingredients (e.g. vitamins)
