Grades are used to characterize the purity of a substance. However, there is no 'cosmetic grade'. In the cosmetic industry the vast majority of ingredients are either technical grade or sometimes also pharmaceutical grade (e.g. NF, BP, USP, Ph Eur, DAB, DAC etc.). Since substances with a pharmaceutical grade have a higher purity they are much more expensive than products with a technical grade. Pharmaceutical grade chemicals are used almost exclusively in medical research and the production of pharmaceutical products.
